Located at the crossroads of the Atlantic Ocean, the Landes forest and the Gironde estuary, Bordeaux’s central position between trade routes, both land and river, in the heart of a rich wine region has made it one of France’s leading cities, with palaces, rich abbeys and a cathedral. An important center of international trade, the Romans planted vines from the Basque foothills along the banks of the Garonne at the advent of the Empire. During the Renaissance, it became an intellectual center with the College of Guyenne. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Bordeaux became the first port in France and the third largest slave port. Crossed by the Garonne River and close to the Côte d’Argent, the city of the Enlightenment has been showcasing its golden facades, prestigious courtyards and monumental squares accompanied by its French gardens since the 18th century.
Bordeaux is the world’s wine capital with its prestigious chateaux and vineyards. The city is also considered one of the centers of gastronomy and business tourism for the organization of international conferences. The outskirts of Bordeaux are also a central and strategic hub for the aerospace sector, home to several international companies such as Dassault Aviation, ArianeGroup, Safran and Thales. In addition, the town of Le Barp, between Bordeaux and Arcachon, is home to one of only two megajoule lasers in the world.
With the University of Bordeaux, the city and its metropolis are an important center of higher education and research at the national and European level with more than 100,000 students.
