Valérie Belin. ‘Les visions silencieuses’.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux regularly invites contemporary artists to take a personal look at its collections. Valérie Belin presents Les visions silencieuses, a major monographic exhibition.

This exhibition dedicated to Valérie Belin (b. 1964), considered one of the major figures of her generation and one of the rare representatives of plastic photography, follows in the footsteps of previous exhibitions organized by the Musée des Beaux-Arts highlighting the work of women artists, such as Suzanne Lafont in 2018 and Rosa Bonheur in 2022. Bringing together around a hundred works spanning the artist’s entire career, from the late 1990s to the most recent series, including a previously unseen series, the exhibition is spread across the two sites of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, highlighting the singularity of her work.

Valérie Belin’s many references to art history, through genres such as still life, portraiture, the nude and the cult of the body, make for a stimulating and original dialogue with the Bordeaux collections.

Thus, in the two wings of the museum, eleven photographs enter into conversation with the painting collections. The choice of these correspondences is mainly based on formal similarities, focusing in particular on the female portrait, the artist’s favorite subject.
