Porte Cailhau reopens to visitors

Today, after two months of renovation work, the Porte Cailhau has reopened its doors, unveiling a completely redesigned tour route.

Once part of Bordeaux’s protective walls in the Middle Ages, the Porte Cailhau, along with the Grosse Cloche, is one of the few remnants of the city’s ramparts that can still be visited today.

Built at the end of the 15th century, during the reign of Charles VIII, the Porte Cailhau also celebrates the king’s victory at the Battle of Fornoue in 1495 in the province of Parma. On the façade overlooking the Garonne River, you can admire his statue, as well as his coat of arms on the city side.

Since July 2024, the interior of the monument has featured a new scenography spread over four levels: models, old plans, animated portraits, interactive activities and a new reception area with a pretty souvenir store. The visit, accessible to all, is an ascent full of surprises, crowned by a panoramic view of the city and the river.

Visitors plunge into the world of the city’s defenders, discovering the old guardhouses, such as the portcullis chamber, where soldiers operated the heavy defensive gate, or used stones and arrows to repel attackers with the stunner.

The tour ends under a magnificent medieval roof structure, offering a spectacular view of the Garonne River, the hillsides of the right bank, and the rooftops along the quayside to the Place de la Bourse.
