Matisse & Frida Kahlo at the Bassins des Lumières

The year 2026 promises to be a colorful one in Bordeaux! At Bassins des Lumières, this renowned digital art center, located in the city’s former submarine base, offers a fascinating experience immersed in the world of two iconic 20th-century artists: Henri Matisse and Frida Kahlo.

A SYMBOLIC SITE DEDICATED TO ART

Les Bassins des Lumières continues to assert its status as one of Europe’s most avant-garde cultural centers. Using huge projections on the historic walls of the submarine base, this exceptional venue transforms each visit into a sensory odyssey where the interplay of light, color, and music creates an unforgettable experience.

TWO ARTISTIC WORLDS TO EXPLORE

Matisse, the harmony of colors

This 45-minute program immerses viewers in the world of Henri Matisse, an undisputed master of color and an iconic figure of Fauvism. Large-scale projections bring his iconic works to life, from his early Impressionist pieces to the most daring creations of his career. The water in the pools and the imposing walls are transformed into a lively setting where shapes and tones converse in an authentic visual symphony.

Frida Kahlo, at the heart of the action

Complementing Matisse, a shorter program (approximately 14 to 15 minutes) invites you to explore the rich and powerful world of Frida Kahlo. Through her creations and symbols, the exhibition reveals the Mexican artist’s artistic power and her deep connection to pain, identity, and nature. This journey, as vibrant as it is moving, offers a personal and touching counterpoint to Matisse’s chromatic explosiveness.
