La Méca: the new cultural place with a strong identity

Inaugurated on June 28, the MÉCA, (Maison de l’Economie Créative et de la culture de la Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine), defines itself as the tool for artists and creative sectors in New Aquitaine, at the service of the departments.

An unusual place on 12,000 m2:

Within this emblematic arch of the future Euratlantic district near Saint Jean station, each space is conceived as a living place for artistic experimentation, offering professionals a unique and expanded field of action.

A true house of a creative hybrid, the MECA welcomes the FRAC Aquitaine (Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain – Regonial Funds for Contemporary Art) and the two cultural agencies of the New Aquitaine region: the Agence du livre et du cinéma (ALCA, Agency for Books and Cinema) and the OARA (Office Artistique de la Région – Artistic Office of the Region).

It also has a 400 m2 work platform for artistic creation, an experimental space for young creators, a projection room and offices reserved for production teams shooting in the region, 1000 m2 of exhibition space and 90 m2 for the conservation of works.

A creative laboratory open to the public:

The MECA offers interactions and meetings to the inhabitants of the district and the city, to national and international visitors.

The FRAC, one of whose public service missions is based on the distribution of contemporary art, will offer 3 to 4 major exhibitions each year in addition to its many innovative mediation actions with various audiences (see the current exhibition “Once upon a time in the West”).

The cultural agencies OARA and ALCA will offer regular meetings with the public, such as screenings or outings.

Finally, with its breathtaking view of Bordeaux from its magnificent terrace, visitors will be able to extend the creative experience at the MECA’s café/restaurant, which will be able to adapt its menu to the planned programme. For example, by offering a completely monochrome menu for a contemporary art exhibition. A whole program!
